CFE Spotlight on Teaching book reviews are designed to help faculty, staff, and graduate students determine which books to add to their own personal libraries or to use in their work with faculty and/or graduate students to stimulate discussions on teaching and learning. The books available for review have been selected from recently published books on teaching and learning, often referenced in the teaching/learning literature as “must read” books.
Please let us know if you are willing to write a review for this newsletter. Not only do you get to assist your colleagues, but you also get to keep the book you review as a token of our appreciation for your efforts. Once a title has been selected from the following list, the selection will be removed and a new title will be added. Therefore, if you are not keenly interested in any of the titles listed here now, please check back periodically. If you have a suggestion for a book that should be added to our list, please email your suggestion to the CFE Spotlight on Teaching Managing Editor, Helen Crompton.
Each review should follow this outline: introduction, summary of the book’s content, your analysis and evaluation of the book, and conclusion. This outline is available in more detail from the Writing Center (http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/review.html). The length of the review is limited to 500 words. Once submitted, your book review will be edited by two CFE staff members. You will have the opportunity to proofread the final edited version before publication. Reviews will be published in the CFE Spotlight on Teaching.
To write a book review, submit the book review interest form.
1. Identify the book you are interested in reviewing.
2. If the book is available, it will be sent to you via campus mail or you can drop by the CFE and pick it up. The review should be completed within four (4) weeks of receiving the book. If you find that you cannot complete the review in that time frame, simply return the book.
3. As a token of our appreciation for doing the review, the book is yours to keep. When you have completed the review, please submit the following:
a. The completed book review (500 word limit)
b. A cover sheet that has your name, title, department, and contact information.
