Students Writing beyond the Classroom

This goal of this project is to engage undergraduate composition students more deeply in academic writing and review. In five undergraduate courses in the English Department, graded assignments will be potential submissions for People, Ideas, and Things Online, an online, peer-reviewed journal for undergraduate students. A web-based collaboration suite will be used to facilitate the peer review process for both text and rich-media work. Students will develop an understanding of the peer review process as both authors and reviewers.
Daniel Anderson and Ashley Hall, Department of English

Lumbee Indian History: Using Technology to Tell Our Own Stories

This project will promote student understanding of the history and culture of the Lumbee of North Carolina, a Native American tribe. Wikis will be used to facilitate collaboration 1) among students, 2) between students and experts throughout the United States, and 3) between students and interested members of the public. Students will draw on the digital holdings of the Southern Historical Collection at UNC and other area collections for primary source material, and will produce their own oral and video interviews in the field. At the end of the semester students will present their work during an online interactive seminar that will be accessible to the public.
Malinda Maynor-Lowery, History

Enhancing Collaborative Music Education

This project will use portable video-conferencing bundles to link students enrolled in music courses with composers and master musicians off campus. Ensemble classes will perform the works of composers who will be watching and listening from remote locations. The composers will be able to share unique perspectives on their work and provide feedback on the students' performances through the use of audio conferencing and a camera that they will be able to control remotely.

Preparing Pharmacy Students for Complex Clinical Environments through Online Simulation

The goal of this project is to use a simulated environment to help prepare pharmacy students for work in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The NICU will be simulated in the virtual world Second Life and task-based exercises will be integrated in order to assess students’ understanding and provide them with active learning opportunities. This virtual environment will become part of a larger set of virtual learning facilities called Pharmatopia. UNC is one of eight international universities participating in the consortium.
Peter Gal, School of Pharmacy

Using Virtual Worlds to Make Poster Presentation an Iterative Process

This project will use an online virtual world to review poster presentations given by Pharmacy students. In advance of the annual meeting of the NC Association of Pharmacists, students and faculty members will participate in a virtual conference in Second Life. Faculty members will rate student posters and provide immediate feedback. Ultimately, the School of Pharmacy would like to use this platform to host an international conference that would allow more students to participate.

Improving Dental Competency Evaluations

The goal of this project is to improve the frequency and quality of faculty feedback for dental students during their competency assessments. Digital pen and camera technology will be used in clinical settings to improve the quality of the feedback, increase the amount of face-to-face feedback that the instructor can provide during the evaluation, and expedite student access to a digital version of the completed evaluation.
