This session welcomes you to Carolina and provides the foundation for examining the top ten tips for being a successful faculty member at Carolina.

Tip 1: Get Connected
Establishing relationships and connections is a critical aspect of success as a faculty member. This session highlights the importance of having mentors, developing supportive relationships with colleagues, and identifying collaborators.

Tip 2: Consider the Culture
Approach your first few months here as a “fieldwork” process, as an anthropologist would when arriving in a new tribe or community. Observe and study how things are done, how relationships are structured, and procedures are organized.

Tip 3: Understand the Basics of How Students Learn
Teaching can be tremendously time consuming, and the most frustrating part is that committing a  large amount of time does not necessarily mean the best learning environment is being created. This session addresses some fundamental aspects of teaching designed to improve student learning, including information specifically about teaching Carolina students.
