Faculty Foundations is an annual workshop series that connects new and early career faculty with what CFE has to offer with respect to teaching and learning, research support, leadership, mentoring, and succeeding as a faculty member here at Carolina.

The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) is the University’s faculty development center, with resources and offerings related to teaching and learning, mentoring, research support, and leadership.

This interactive workshop is essential for all new faculty, providing a foundation for setting career goals, creating your individual development plan, and identifying mentoring support at Carolina. Time will also be dedicated to planning for faculty career development needs.

In this session, attendees will hear from units on campus that are dedicated to supporting research initiatives of UNC faculty. Topics will include options for direct grant writing support and submissions for pilot projects through large scale initiatives, opportunities for training, data management, digital resources, where to go for consultations, finding partners/collaborators, and the administrative, financial, and reporting obligations of researchers.

We often listen to reply not to understand. What are the leadership strategies to improve your active listening skills? We will use a Listening Assessment Tool from the Center for Creative Leadership to review your developmental needs and identify action-oriented strategies to improve.

As a mentee, it’s important to be proactive in developing your relationships with mentors. Perhaps you have thought about potential mentors but don’t know where to start. How do you establish those initial relationships, and what are good strategies to engage mentors? In this interactive workshop, participants will identify steps to take to engage with potential mentors, sponsors, and other supports. Participants will also develop and practice skills for connecting with potential mentors. The session builds on the workshop, What’s Your Plan?, and is open to all new faculty regardless of whether they attend the previous session.

Make the most of instructional technology tools to support your teaching goals this fall. Sakai, Zoom, and Poll Everywhere can be used to make your classes run smoothly and support your students’ learning. This session will cover the basics of these programs in a teaching context. Come with your questions!

In this interactive workshop, participants will determine mentoring/support needs and identify potential mentors, sponsors, and other supports. Participants will also create a map for a mentoring network and list steps to take to engage mentors and other supports.
