CFE Faculty Foundations 2022 Program

Faculty Foundations is an annual event that connects new and early career faculty with CFE resources for teaching and learning, research, leadership, mentoring, and succeeding as a faculty member here at Carolina. This year’s event will take place both in-person and virtually.

CFE Faculty Foundations events for August 10 through August 12 feature Just-In-Time Workshops. All new and returning faculty are invited to attend and may register by clicking the button below. Just-In-Time Workshops include sessions to support teaching and mentoring as faculty prepare for the fall semester. All Just-In-Time Workshops will be virtual.

11:30 AM – 1:00 PM: Meet the CFE – Drop-In for Lunch and Learn (Suite 316, Ground Floor, Wilson Library and Greenlaw Hall Room 101)
Visit the CFE to pick up a boxed lunch and meet our staff. Learn about our work, our upcoming faculty programs, and how we can help you succeed at Carolina.

  • 12:00-1:00 PM Join us at noon for a brief welcome and overview of the CFE. Learn about our work, upcoming programs, and talk with CFE staff about how we can help you succeed at Carolina. (Greenlaw 101)

1:15 PM – 2:45 PM: What’s Your Plan? Developing Your Mentoring Network (Greenlaw Hall Room 101)
An essential, interactive workshop for all new faculty providing a foundation for setting career goals, creating your individual development plan, and identifying mentoring support at Carolina. Time will also be dedicated to planning for faculty career development needs. Join us Tuesday, August 9, for a follow-up session about connecting with mentors and building mentoring relationships.

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Concurrent Sessions

  • Overview of UNC Research Support (Room 101, Greenlaw Hall) 
    • This Faculty Foundations session will provide a general overview of proposal and grant support services at UNC, including descriptions on who to reach out to for help in preparing and managing proposals and awards. We will also provide tools to help you navigate the institutional research environment and at-a-glance online resources useful to faculty new to campus.
  • Strategic Course Design: Reviewing Course Objectives and Alignment (Room 317, Greenlaw Hall)
    • Before launching your course, it is beneficial to review your syllabus for alignment between learning objectives, activities, and assessment methods. Bring your draft syllabus to assess whether the learning objectives are measurable and student-centered, and how well assignments promote student engagement and success.
  • Centering Student Support in Your Courses (Room 203, Dey Hall)
    • This fall, Carolina students will return to campus after two recent traumatic and disruptive years. You can design your course to be supportive of students as they make this transition. This workshop will provide practical guidance for instructors who want to build community in their courses and foster student success. We’ll also help you connect with campus resources that can be partners for you and your students.

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Provost Welcome and Reception (Anne Queen Lounge, Campus Y)
Join CFE staff, other faculty, and campus partners to kick off the fall semester. Provost remarks to begin around 4:15 PM.

In this interactive workshop, participants will identify steps to take to engage with potential mentors, sponsors, and other supports. Participants will also develop skills for connecting with potential mentors. The session builds on the workshop, What’s Your Plan?, and is open to all new faculty regardless of whether they attend the previous session.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Centering Student Support in Your Courses (remote)

9:30 AM – 10:00 AM: Getting Started with Poll Everywhere (remote)
Class polling is a common student engagement tool used to seed discussion, promote applied thinking, and assess student understanding of course concepts. In this introductory workshop, participants will learn about strategies for developing effective poll assignments and will be introduced to basic steps for getting started with Poll Everywhere.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Strategies for Making Large Classes Feel Smaller (remote)
Large enrollment courses are among the most challenging to teach. During this session, we’ll share ideas for creating engaging, inclusive, and scalable learning environments, regardless of your class size.

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM: CFE and TEAM ADVANCE Mentoring Programs Information Session (remote)
Interested in improving your mentoring? Curious about mentoring support to advance your career? Meet CFE Mentoring staff and members of TEAM ADVANCE, and learn about our 2022-23 faculty mentoring programs: TEAM ADVANCE Faculty Mentor Training to enhance faculty mentoring skills; Women ADVANCE Leadership program to support mid-career women faculty; and TEAM ADVANCE Peer Mentoring Circles to promote early-career faculty development.

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM: Beyond Think-Pair-Share: 10 Strategies for Active-Learning Small Groups in the Classroom (remote)
In-class, small group work can engage students with one another and course materials to enhance higher-order thinking, mastery of course concepts, diverse views, and deeper learning. Research shows that small-group learning improves academic achievement, relationships between classmates and faculty, and overall well-being.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Scantron/Bubblesheets at UNC: Introduction to Gradescope (remote)
This session explores how faculty use Gradescope to effectively administer exams, efficiently grade, and deliver effective feedback to students in their courses.

Limited to new faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences. CFE staff will provide an overview of our services and upcoming programs.
