Leadership Development Advanced Program 2017-18 Session VIII: Mentoring and Coaching

April 5, 2018, 7:30 AM - 10:00 AM EDT

woman climbingLeadership Advanced is a cohort program for leaders with two or more years of experience. It is focused on key leadership assessments and topics. Participants will learn leadership concepts and models, build specific skills, and practice mastery of those skills through real case studies and small group mentoring and coaching. Leaders will focus on how to continue to develop those skills and mentor others through a targeted and specific individual leadership development plan.

Experienced Leaders (Fall 2017 – Spring 2018),

By appointment only

Sessions: Thursdays, 11:30-2:00 PM (buffet lunch served)
Program Completion and Celebration, ½ Day, May 10, 2018
304 Wilson Library (bottom floor next to Music Library)

Each part of this leadership program offers reflection, models and practice in leading effectively. We start with self-reflection as a leader because this is the intentional pathway to interacting well with others. A commitment to all the sessions as a leadership cohort will provide the fundamental connections and collaborations to make learning meaningful, relevant and sustainable. As an experienced leadership cohort group we will engage a deliberate review of the group’s current successful leadership practices and build upon those shared experiences as we approach each session’s learning.

Part II: Building Relationships with Others

With a clearer understanding of your strengths, styles, approaches and skills as a leader, we will engage in skill-building sessions that enhance your interpersonal relationships. These sessions include the foundational relationship building skills such as active listening, giving and receiving feedback, managing and mentoring. We will refresh your active listening skills which provide the backbone to interacting effectively.

Your understanding about why you would give feedback and how to give feedback offers ways you can address the nuances about how others hear and respond to feedback. Creating a culture for giving feedback productively in your group allows the flow of work and creativity to move forward and increase learning from our experiences.

We will define and demystify conflict by identifying typical conflict styles of you as leader and others. We will begin to build conversations that are sensitive to how conflict addresses, resolves and cultivates creative solutions.

A focus on building teams within our academic settings will engage knowledge and awareness of typical group formation, dynamics and leadership options. Our work in understanding the factors and dynamics that foster collaboration will energize teams and other group meetings and discussions.

Understanding your own motivators and the motivations of others reinforces meaningful and productive relationships and collaborations.

Mentoring and coaching addresses and engages others in thinking and planning for accomplishments. Being able to know the difference between coaching and mentoring provides a comprehensive approach for empowering others. Knowing how to delegate key tasks and how to communicate and coach others to accomplish those tasks establishes a clear path for achievements.
