Dr. James joined CFE in 2018 to oversee faculty development resources, initiatives, and partnerships that promote effective teaching and learning. He brings nearly 20 years of experience with faculty and graduate student development at Northwestern University’s Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, Duke University Graduate School, and NC State’s Office of Faculty Development. His research interests include: how teacher epistemologies inform classroom practices; effective peer review and consultation practices; factors that support faculty career success; graduate student development; how personal theologies and spiritual formation inform teaching; research ethics training, and assessment in faculty development. Doug completed an interdisciplinary PhD at Northwestern University focused on post-secondary teaching, adult development, and learning organizations in the School of Education and Social Policy, along with a focus on religion in society and personality at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, an ecumenical graduate school related to the United Methodist Church. He also earned the MDiv and ThM at Princeton Theological Seminary and completed Clinical Pastoral Education chaplaincy training at the Cleveland Clinic (OH), Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (NJ), and Duke University Medical Center providing an interest in clinical teaching, patient-centered care, and interprofessional education
