Faculty Foundations 2023

CFE Faculty Foundations is a welcome for faculty new to Carolina and a part of the faculty orientation experience. The event includes two days of in-person workshops, networking opportunities, and social events to connect new and early career faculty with CFE resources for career planning, mentoring, teaching and learning, leadership, research, and succeeding as a faculty member here at Carolina. The week also features Just-In-Time Workshops, open to all new and returning faculty, to support teaching and mentoring in preparation for the fall semester.

11:30 AM – 12:45 PM: Meet the CFE (Lunch provided)

Connect with new colleagues, meet CFE staff, and learn more about the programs, resources, and services at the Center for Faculty Excellence offers.

1:00 – 2:15 PM: What’s Your Plan? Charting Your Faculty Course at Carolina
Carroll Hall 111
An interactive workshop to help new faculty develop a networking and mentoring plan, identify potential mentors, understand how to use individual development plans, and set goals in support of their career development.

2:30 – 3:45 PM: Introduction to Teaching at Carolina
Carroll Hall 111
An interactive session to orient new faculty to teaching at Carolina, including introducing resources and sharing an overview of key partners across campus.

4:30 – 7:00 PM: Provost Welcome and Reception (Hors d’oeuvres and drinks provided)
Anne Queen Lounge, Campus Y
Join us for an end-of-day welcome networking reception featuring remarks by the Provost, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, and Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Success. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks served beginning at 5:00 pm, and remarks to begin at 5:30 pm.

10:00 – 11:30 AM: If I Knew Then What I Know Now (Panel; Coffee provided)

Hear from a panel of early-career faculty who have come to Carolina in the last 5 years about what they wish they had known when first starting – and what they have learned along the way.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Informal Networking Lunch (Lunch provided)
Carroll Hall 111
CFE staff and campus partners will be on hand for networking and conversation.

12:45 – 2:00 PM: Concurrent Sessions 1

  • Beyond Think-Pair-Share: 10 Strategies for In-Class Small Groups (Greenlaw 101)
    • Faculty will learn 10 teaching strategies they can implement during class, consider how each strategy supports course objectives, recognize the pros and cons of each strategy, and reflect on their roles as instructors.
  • Developing Your Mentoring Network: Building and Maintaining Mentoring Relationships (Wilson Library 304)
    • Faculty will identify steps to take to engage with potential mentors, sponsors, and other supports. Faculty will also develop skills for connecting with potential mentors. The session builds on the workshop, What’s Your Plan?, and is open to all new faculty regardless of whether they attend the previous session.
  • Launching Your Research Program (Carroll Hall 111; in partnership with UNC Research)
    • In this introductory overview to the administrative support teams for research and scholarship at UNC, faculty will learn about the resources available at Carolina that support finding funding, proposal support, post-award management, and internal collaboration. The session will also introduce Dimensions/Altmetrics, a tool to support faculty collaboration and research.

2:15 – 3:30 PM: Concurrent Sessions 2

    • Faculty will develop an understanding of leadership, identify qualities of effective leaders, articulate their leadership values, and draw connections to how they lead in their different faculty roles.
  • Getting Started with Canvas (Carroll Hall 111; in partnership with ITS Educational Technologies)
    • The Educational Technologies Team will introduce faculty to Canvas, the University’s learning management system, demonstrate Canvas basics, and be available to answer questions.

2023 Just-In-Time Workshops

9:30-10:30 AM: Gradescope at Carolina
Gradescope is Carolina’s tool to administer and grade online or digitized paper-based homework, quizzes, and exams with open-ended or multiple-choice questions. This session explores how faculty can use Gradescope to effectively administer exams, grade, and deliver feedback to students in their courses.

10:30-11:30 AM: Setting the Stage for an Engaged Semester
How can educators help students remain engaged and enthusiastic about learning – and do so without compromising their own well-being? In this interactive workshop, participants discuss concrete practices for the first day(s) of class that promote a positive learning environment and foster connections between students, between students and instructor, and between students and course content.

10:30-11:30 AM: Getting Started with Canvas (in partnership with ITS-Educational Technologies)
The Educational Technologies Team will introduce faculty to Canvas, the University’s learning management system, demonstrate Canvas basics, and be available to answer questions.

1:00-2:00 PM: Engage Students from the Start: Meaningful Warm-Up Activities
Are you looking for ways to boost student participation and deepen student learning during your class sessions? Use the opening minutes of class to engage students in meaningful learning from the start. This session will provide you with a variety of ideas for effective warm-up activities and the space and guidance to start developing a warm-up that you can implement in your course.

11:30 AM-12:30 PM: Services and Support Throughout the Research Life Cycle: How the Odum Institute Can Make Your Scholarship Better!
This workshop will provide an overview to the variety of services and support activities offered at the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science. The Odum Institute supports the Carolina community by providing education and support for planning, implementing, and disseminating research. Odum strives to advance rigorous and reproducible research across the data, social and health sciences, while building collaborative, trans-disciplinary research networks.

1:00-2:00 PM: Creating an Inclusive Syllabus
The syllabus is often the first point of contact between your students and your course. How can you ensure that this important document is inviting, not discouraging? In this session, we’ll review strategies to make your syllabus more welcoming, transparent, and supportive of all students. Plan to bring an existing or draft syllabus to evaluate and begin to revise.

3:30-4:30 Getting Started with Poll Everywhere (in partnership with ITS-Educational Technologies)
Whether you are new to Poll Everywhere or are simply looking for a refresher, we will cover some of the basics and leave some time for questions. By the end of the session, participants will be able to align poll prompts with learning objectives, utilize the variety of features and poll types available through Poll Everywhere, and make use of best practices for effectively administering polls in their courses.
